About
Welcome to Chicken Run Family Restaurant and Steak House, nestled in the heart of Windham, NY! This inviting eatery is more than just a restaurant; it’s a gathering place for families and friends, renowned for its warm, friendly ambiance and comforting American classics.
Located at 5639 NY-23, this family-friendly spot is designed to accommodate everyone, boasting wheelchair access, outdoor seating, and even a dog-friendly atmosphere. Whether you’re enjoying a casual lunch with the kids, a dinner outing with friends, or indulging in one of their delicious desserts, the vibe is always laid-back and welcoming.
The menu is a delightful mix of American comfort food that will make your taste buds dance. Highly recommended is the fried chicken combo — juicy, crispy, and bursting with flavor, served with their special honey sauce, French fries, and cornbread. Diners rave about its melt-in-your-mouth softness and how the cornbread becomes an instant favorite, not just an afterthought. The 24 oz ribeye is another standout; perfectly seasoned and cooked to a beautiful medium-rare, it provides a steak experience that rivals New York City’s finest steakhouses, at an excellent value.
Notably, Chicken Run embraces a community-focused approach. Many guests have highlighted the friendly, accommodating staff who treat every patron like family. From smooth service on busy nights to live music that adds a lively touch to the experience, this restaurant resonates with a cozy neighborhood charm. However, be mindful that the vegetarian options are somewhat limited, making it a true haven for meat lovers.
As a food reviewer for Foodjoyy, I cannot recommend Chicken Run Family Restaurant and Steak House enough. The combination of family-friendly service, a diverse menu filled with mouthwatering dishes, and a warm atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination for both locals and visitors. Whether you visit for a celebration or just a casual bite, be prepared to leave with a full belly and a smile!
For an unforgettable dining experience, make your way to Chicken Run—it’s not just a meal; it's a cherished memory waiting to happen.
“ A group of 5 of us came here on a busy Friday night without reservations, when the restaurant was completely booked. We waited about 5 minutes before they sat us, informing us we would have about an hour to sit and eat if we didn't want to wait for a table since that table was reserved for a party that would arrive in an hour. We figured it was enough time to order, sit and eat, and it was! They put our orders in as priority to speed up the process. The food here was one of the best I've had while on my trip at Hunter Mountain. And you know it's good when the locals frequent this place as well! Very family friendly and the kindest staff. Our favorite order was the fried chicken combo with French fries and mashed potatoes w/gravy, and it came with their special honey sauce, and cornbread. The chicken was hot, crispy, juicy and full of flavor! Dipping the chicken into the honey made it even better! Their cornbread was also very good with the honey! And that's saying a lot since I don't normally enjoy cornbread from anywhere else. Here the cornbread isn't dry and is more like cornbread cake. Anyway, the chicken combo was so good, we ordered another one as we're eating this one and devoured that one as well! We also ordered the 24 oz ribeye and this dish went pretty fast! For medium rare, the steak was seasoned and cooked nicely, pink on the inside and had a good bite to it. Very reasonable price compared to New York prices! We also ordered the chicken pot pie with coleslaw. We weren't fan of either of these. The puff pastry on top of the pot pie was probably the best part. But this one lacked flavor and we would probably skip this in the future. Overall, we pretty much finished all the food within 20 minutes after it arrived (including our 2nd order of the fried chicken combo!) and were completely stuffed and very happy with our experience here! Would definitely recommend this place and come back as well. ”
“ Super awesome family friendly vibe + amazing live music. The staff are the most friendly human beings ever. I really like this gem of down home vibe as well. The food is all American, like you are a BBQ, family restaurant, and steak place in one but with a lot of love. Warning - do not go here if you are vegetarian. Options are severely limited. ”
“ Our favorite spot in Windham. Amazing service, great food and a decent bourbon list. A classic experience for kids and adults alike. ”
“ We came here for some dinner and shared the chicken combo. The honey chicken was extremely delicious! The combo also came with two sides. The staff here are extremely friendly as well. It gets packed on the weekends so if they take reservations I would suggest making them. Luckily we didn't run into any issues on Sunday night. ”
“ Came in here late on a Saturday with a large crew. They were great. Happy go lucky. The staff is always friendly and the place is always family friendly. The food is very good. I've had some meals that I wasn't to keen on but 90 percent of what I get is great. The place is low key and family friendly and I highly recommend you go here. ”
“ Cathy the Manager is amazing We forgot to make a reservation and it was a high peak at the restaurant. Cathy made sure to accommodate us at the Bar and we got the best Service, ate delicious comfort food. It was an ugly sweater Christmas event with music. Everyone was having fun and dancing. Definitely recommend going to the chicken run!! ”
“ My wife and I split a chicken and ribs dinner. Delicious and enjoyable atmosphere. you will be back :-) ”
“ Satisfying take out dinner: fried chicken and their "Famous handmade Italian Sausage served over sauteed onions and peppers." (Not sure I'd call it "famous," but still pretty good.) Large portions, sides of cornbread and coleslaw good, too. Very reasonably priced. ”
“ Still good food, still good value, but I wanted to update that there is now a percentage charge added if you pay with a card. ”
